What is the difference between private and NHS speech therapy?

Both private and NHS therapists have the same training and qualification, and often offer similar services, but NHS waiting times tend to be longer for both assessment and therapy.

How can I check that a therapist is registered?

All practising therapists must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You can check a therapist is registered by going to their website, choosing the profession and searching their name.

Can you see a client if they are also seeing an NHS therapist?

Most of the time this is not a problem, depending on the therapy approach. However it is important that both therapists know this, to ensure that therapy is effective.

How do I know how long you’ll need to see me for?

Every person is different and will respond to the therapy process differently. You will have an individualised plan based on your needs with appropriate goals. At regular intervals (usually six-week blocks), we will review your progress to see if new targets need to be set or whether we should stop therapy.  You can stop therapy any time (we require 24 hours notice prior to cancelling a session otherwise the full fee will be required).

Will my Medical Insurance cover the costs of private speech and language therapy?

We recommend you discuss this with your Insurance Company to check the terms of your cover and if you will be fully reimbursed for private speech and language therapy. We are unable to suspend collection of fees or claim fees directly from the insurers. It might be a good idea to check with your insurers on your cover for 'type of appointment' and their recognition of the referrer.

How do I pay for your services?

We take either cash or BACS payment.  For assessment sessions, payment must be received in advance. Reports will be distributed once full payment is received.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give as much notice as possible if you need to cancel an appointment, so that the appointment time can be offered to another client. There is no cost for a cancellation with 24 hours’ notice. Full payment is taken for sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice.
